Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of TheJokeDB, including its pages and its public API (together, “the service”), operated by the operator of this site (LEGAL_OPERATOR is not set). By using the service you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.
The service
TheJokeDB is a free collection of jokes, each reviewed by a person before it is published. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the service at any time, and we may limit how often you can use it. We try hard to keep it available, but we make no promise that it will be.
Using the service
You may read, share and link to jokes for personal, non-commercial enjoyment. You agree not to:
- scrape, crawl or bulk-download the site, other than through the API and within its published limits;
- interfere with the service, probe it for vulnerabilities without permission, or try to get around rate limits, Family mode or the content ratings;
- present our content as a service of your own without clear attribution;
- use the service for anything unlawful.
Family mode and ratings
Every joke carries a rating from clean to explicit. Family mode is on by default and shows clean jokes only; turning it off, and choosing to see crude or explicit jokes, is your decision, and you confirm that you are old enough to see such content where you live. Ratings are assigned by people and software doing their best and may be wrong; see our Disclaimer.
The API
The API is offered for personal projects, research and small applications. Single jokes, random picks and search are open; listing the catalogue needs an API key, which we issue at our discretion and may revoke. Please keep request rates reasonable and include a link back to TheJokeDB where jokes are shown. We may add quotas or terms for commercial use, and we may block clients that abuse the service. The API is provided as-is and may change between versions; we will keep an old version running for a reasonable time after announcing a new one.
Submitting jokes
When you submit a joke you keep whatever rights you have in it, and you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual licence to store, edit, tag, rate, translate, publish and distribute it on the service and through the API, with or without the credit name you provide. You promise that you have the right to grant that licence, that the joke does not infringe anyone else’s rights or break the law, and that it contains no personal data about anyone.
Every submission is reviewed before it is published. We may edit for spelling, framing and length, add tags and ratings, reject anything for any reason, and remove published jokes at any time. We owe nobody payment for a submission.
Content and copyright
Many jokes are folk material with no identifiable author, and we treat them as such. The selection, tagging, ratings, editorial text and presentation on this site are ours. If you believe the service hosts your original work without permission, write to [email protected] with a link to the joke and enough detail for us to assess the claim, and we will respond promptly.
Advertising
The service is funded by advertising, as described in our Privacy Policy. Advertisements are provided by third parties and are not endorsements; we are not a party to any transaction between you and an advertiser.
No warranty
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. See our Disclaimer.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss of data or profit, arising from your use of the service. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us to use the service, which is nothing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the country where the operator is established (LEGAL_JURISDICTION is not set), and its courts have jurisdiction over any dispute, without affecting the protection you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top tells you when. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the new terms.
